Hi Brad.
I need to replace my entire Controller Bar because some songs require specific buttons for that song.
I think I read somewhere that someone asked you the same question, namely, whether it is possible to associate a specific Controller Bar with a specific song.
Would it be complicated to create this association?
I think it might be of interest to various colleagues on the forum!
I’m no expert, but, from what i’ve read it doesn’t look possible. There are a number of work arounds but nothing seems to work on a per song basis - I might be wrong. The following topic might help: -
Hi @Brad.
Perhaps I didn’t explain myself clearly. I’m a beginner compared to most of my friends on the forum!
Let me explain what I meant with my question.
I use the Controller Bar buttons a lot, and sometimes I have to replace an entire strip of the Controller Bar with another one because some buttons are unusable with the song or set list I’m using.
Let me give you an example of two songs, one with a church organ and another with a Hammond (Rock) VST organ.
The song with church organ music requires specific buttons.
The song for rock music requires other buttons, different from the previous ones.
Every time I change songs, I have to waste time replacing the Controller Bar strip.
When I’m playing in church, a quick change would be a good solution!
The question I asked in my previous post was whether it is possible to “link” a specific song to a corresponding controller bar strip.
I use specific racks within the song and I see a section on the bottom left dedicated to enabling/disabling (state behavior - rack): could a flag be set here to “link” this or that rack to a specific controller bar?
Best regards.
I don’t know your budget or stage/platform constraints, but that sounds to me like a good application for an external controller.
You can route the controller to the plug-in you need to control and filter the bindings as needed, without having to fuss.
I do something similar with a mixer controller: Some nights I need to boost or cut, depending on how enthusiastic our drummer is, so I route the first fader to it Always tweaks whatever is troublesome, usually an EP.
I prefer a tactile push rather than fussing with the screen.
I play for pleasure, and I have external buttons and pedals available.
But I often use Cantabile’s Controller Bar.
I could buy a touch screen, I could do different things.
One thing I have, as in CB, is the association via MIDI channel bindings for external buttons and pedals.
It’s just a matter of practicality for me, as I often prepare my set lists on my PC, without keyboards, and without pedals or buttons.
That’s why I asked Brad if this could be done in Cantabile.
Hi Charles.
I have to say I like your approach, I do it partly myself.
I understand what you do with your drummer: you should have a fader just for him, so that when he wants to change his volume, he can do it himself, and he’s very happy!
Yes, I think it can be solved with dedicated bindings alone. In theory, for me, it could be the same thing, but I love having the Controller Bar strips on my monitor, even if, as you say, tactile control might be the best choice. But even if I adopted this method, I like to see the choices I make on my monitor. One example: I have set up colored toggle buttons, so when I activate the VST, the button changes from dark to light, or the volume: when I move the volume pedal, I can see the slider button moving. For me, that’s no small thing.
Thank you for your advice!
Yeah, an Ableton Push (or one of its less expensive clones) can be setup to do exactly that, though obviously it’s a bit more involved to setup, but I can see how keeping it internal to Cantabile would be attractive.
If it’s of interest to my colleagues on the forum, I’ve completed my checks by purchasing Akai’s MIDI Mix. Now I have most of the controls set up in the Controller Bar strips, even with the MIDI Mix. For others, such as Leslie, I use other external buttons. Basically, I observe the commands given by the Akai Mixer in the Controller Bar.
In fact, as soon as I’m ready (I’m correcting/integrating a few things), I plan to publish a song with my settings, which might pheraps be usefuls
See you soon.
