Train whistle effect. Same as if you were singing, without monitors, and could only hear your voice from wall reflections of speakers out front. Quite prevalent in the 70’s. Singers always sang flat. Thankfully, Monitors finally became a normal part of PA system, although SOME singers couldn’t sing in tune regardless.

You know, it occurs to me that maybe air density is the problem here. If you, say, released the proper ratio of argon into the room at a gig the sound waves should slow down creating a lower pitch- like when you breathe helium, only using a heavy gas to achieve the opposite effect.
