Another Big Decision Coming.......Win 11

Well I can proudly announce that I have updated to Windows 11. Only I didn’t! It had been pestering me for several weeks, but I was in no hurry, and kept deferring it or ignoring it. Then on Wednesday evening I switched the laptop on to be met with a message informing me that it was completing the Windows 11 update. Thanks for asking Bill!

Then the fun started - firstly, Cantabile put a splash screen up offering me a chance to try the free download, before buying whichever version I wanted! I clicked on “I already have a licence” option, to be asked for the activation code or, thankfully my email! What a great idea!

Then I find that the update has thrown 2/3rds of my licence/activation codes into the bin. The set list I was preparing was now completely useless! So instead of completing the set list for next Sunday’s service, I had to spend nearly 2 hours chasing activation codes and licences!

All is good now, and maybe the Windows GUI seems a little faster. Maybe!

It is a worry that it has just blindly done it, because a lot of software licenses watch for machine changes including OS, and when doing a software update it is sometimes best to deactivate all licenses first.

Fun times. I suppose my dose is coming since I’m clicking the Windows 11 “Get It” button right after I click “Reply” here…

Hi to all
Every time I turn on the PC there is the usual message from Microsoft asking me to install Windows 11. And I promptly leave it alone …
Frankly, I’m worried. When I was forced to replace my old PC with the current one, I lost 10-15 days to fix licenses and various updates.
Aside from Cantabile, what are the programs that won’t recognize Windows 11?
If I refuse the update, will I have to pay for the update in 3 or 4 years?

Oh crap. If you can make a mirror backup of the system, sounds like time to do it!

So I click the Windows 11 “Get It” button and it said “getting Windows 11” and nothing has happened for several hours and several reboots for installing Win 10 updates…argh.

You need to install a blocker to stop the whatever updates goes on with windows. Deferring sometimes doesn’t work.

Windows Update Blocker v1.7 (sordum.org)

Well a few days in after the Windows 11 invasion, and the laptop does seem to be more responsive, but I have started getting hanging notes again, something which has rarely happened since last year. It may just be a co-incidence, but thought i would mention in case anybody else comes across it.

All good in Win 11 here after a couple of months of heavy usage.

I would recommend installing Winaero Tweaker to restore the sanity of the right-click context menu and the File Explorer ribbon.

Another insanity: you can no longer drag a file from explorer via taskbar. This really annoyed me. A workaround might be the “Classic Taskbar” setting in Winaero Tweaker. Too bad enabling it causes the “Start right click menu” disappearing.

Good morning everyone
I wanted to ask a question about Windows 11.
I hear talk in the forum about clean installation and upgrade.
Can you tell me if upgrading from 10 to 11 involves reinserting the licenses of the various programs (Cantabile, GSi, B-3X, etc.)?
For “clean” installation I think it’s normal to reinsert the licenses, but I’m not sure if it should be done with the simple upgrade.

Sergio

Some plugins will require it, to be honest I don’t remember which ones just worked, and which that required reactivation.

My current reactivation list after version updates is

  • Cantabile
  • Blue 3
  • VB3-II

Older entries I’m not sure about - these activations survived the last version update but required reactivations earlier:

  • XLN Audio plugins (Addictive Drums, Addictive Keys, …)
  • Korg Legacy Collection

Cheers,

Torsten

If I remember correctly, the Korg plugins somehow couple the license to your network card’s hardware id. That’s probably why they didn’t require reactivation when you upgraded to Win 11. A few years ago I tried to disable my wifi driver in an attempt to kill everything that might cause latency or performance issues. Every time I turned of that adapter, Korg M1 would ask for reactivation.

There’s more! Since the update I can’t get an sound oout of the laptop speakers, even though my headphones work! Also, I can’t get any audio via HDMI. Neither of these are a problem with Cantabile, the HDMI being an issue when i want to watch football via my laptop and onto the telly!

Windows has a habit of arbitrarily switching its default audio output device to something you’ve recently introduced it to. I would check your Windows sound settings.

Being the lucky guy that I am, I now own a brand new and modern computer (if you have to ask, I got the rack-mountable Creation Station CS400V7 from Sweetwater upgraded from 32 to 64 gigs of RAM. Please do not read that last line if you tend to be the jealous type. Envy, however, is permitted.)

I pondered on the Win 11 thing, and decided to take the plunge for a few reasons:

  1. Being a new computer, I was going to have to install everything anyway and have all my licenses at hand. I figured it was better to just do it now rather than wait and repeat the performance when I upgrade.
  2. I am suffering from very few anomalies. Digital Performer 11.04 is acting strangely with Komplete Kontrol being “passed” by its scanner, but then it doesn’t appear in the plugin listings when adding a new instrument to a track. It also will not permit both my S-88 mk1 and the S49 mk2 to coexist. One or the other has to be turned off. I have found ways to get around this, but it is an oddball PITA - I am sure it will be fixed soon. Nothing else is acting strangely, and Latency Mon loves it.
  3. The most important piece of software I own - Cantabile 3!!! - is performing swimmingly. That is, never an issue. That is, I love this machine so much now!
All other software is behaving well. The VP of Enterprise Management, Steve Dispenza indicates that Win 11 is really just a bunch of under-the-hood security and performance enhancements built on top of the already solid base of Windows 10, so this is no ground-breaking change like Apple enjoys throwing at folks. (Well, Apple’s changes are EVERYTHING-BREAKING, but I digress…)

I am feeling pretty good about this choice to just go with Windows 11 and let the small growing pains work themselves out in this case. But of course, facing days of installs is no inviting prospect, so it is likely wise and cogent, let alone brilliant and far-seeing and genius-like to wait it out till a VERY convenient week or two comes your way if upgrading an existing computer.

took me from end of October to just before Christmas on my latest DAW upgrade, but probably in elapsed time that would have been a week…
