For those of you who are running Win11, did you use the upgrade path or do a clean install?
Normally, I would just bite the bullet and do a clean install, but I’ve heard that Win11 isn’t that much different. It would take a full day to reload from a clean install.
Clean.
I did two upgrades and one clean install. I didn’t see a lot of difference. YMMV.
This was the first year I did a clean install. I had a number of video and audio issues that I couldn’t fix and that was all it took. It’s certainly alot of work to rebuild. Unless you have having problem, just upgrade.
In my experience, Windows 11 upgrade resets all OS settings deeply.
Therefore, I don’t think it’s much different from a clean install.
During the upgrade, simply select “keep nothing” in the migration wizard.
Hello,
I did reinstall my laptop using AtlasOS. AtlasOS is an optimized windows. It limits the usual bloatware and do many optimizations that works well for audio. This made a huge difference on my PC. With the standard installation I was very limited in the plugins I could use in live situations. Now I have much more possibilities and more confident in its use. Of course it doesn’t change the hardware itself but in my case it feels like a new PC
I first did an update which worked fine for many months. In April, a Windows update made the laptop not bootable, so then I had to do a clean install. Both worked fine with regards to my Cantabile usage.
Thanks for all the info. I’ve been considering moving my 3 rigs to 11, but reading your experiences gives me pause. OTOH I’ve read several that had no issues. Hmmm. The worst part is, my 3 PCs are perfectly synced and matched, and 100% stable. And like most of us I have a LOT of plugins. It will take a few days to get everything moved over and optimized and tested.
I may just take my chances and stay on 10. After all, only the studio PC goes online for most of my plugin updates, and the gig rigs only when required, after I’ve done it on the studio pc. It’s a bit OCD but it’s served me well!
With my two gig laptops, one is running Win 10, the other Win 11. Part of my thinking is that if an update to one or the other operating system tanks the relevant laptop, the other laptop will still be running. (Just something i learned as an engineer working on safe system design.)
