Which laptop do you use that runs Cantabile Performer safely and without crackers or dropouts?
I have CP running on a MacBook Pro Intel(R) Core™ i7-6567U CPU @ 3.30GHz. Windows 10 is installed with Bootcamp, all drivers are up to date. The sound card is a Native Instruments Audio 8DJ.
Unfortunately, increasing the latency doesn’t work either. Hence my question to you above.
Thank you!
The MacBook’s specs are fine, but I wonder about running Win10 on it. It’s a very rare scenario - are the drivers optimal? The Audio 8DJ has been around a long time - I would consider something like the Axe I/O One or the Behringer UMC202HD which I saw on Thomann for $50.
Something like this for $299 might be better than the MBP. I just set one up for a bass player friend with the Axe I/O One - worked great - (not sure if you can order this in EU):
HP ZBook G5 17 – 64GB RAM, 4x2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSDs paired with a Presonus Quantum 26x32 Thunderbolt interface over a Startech TB2->TB3 adapter on a fresh Windows 11 install.
HP Zbook 15 (first generation), 16 GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10 Pro. Also, it works perfectly on an Acer Aspire i5, 16GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10 Pro.
The most important thing to avoid dropouts, latency, crashes, etc. is a stable, solid, reliable, ASIO driver. Of course, with all original plugins installed. That makes the real difference.
I am using an i7 2.8 GHz with 16G of RAM, using the Steinberg ASIO driver which came with my Yamaha MX61 keyboard which now serves solely as a MIDI controller as controlling the volume of the MX sounds from within Cantabile is something I haven’t mastered, but then I’m just an old bloke with fat fingers!
I do have crackle problems on occasion, with both NI’s Icon Bass vst and with Korg’s Wavestate vst. It appears to be with their software, not Cantabile, and I use a workaround whereby all my songs start and finish with everything turned off.
I use a Razer 16 - 14th gen intel cpu with 96gb ram and a 4tb main ssd and 2tb backup ssd. The extra ram is coming in handy now that I am preloading many songs. And I use this for live edrums and I find that size just right, not too small to see the screen with a few windows open on it and not too big to be cumbersome.
ThinkPad T490 i7-8665U 48g ram 4tb gen3 nvme, w/Behringer XR18. Running Trillian, Korg pug-ins, various organ B3 plugins, various NI instruments, SampleTank (3 and 4), MODO Bass 2 and some other things. Works great, no issues so far.
Hi,
thank you all very much for your interesting answers! This makes it much easier to find a very well-functioning life system. I can’t just take the most expensive and thus best on the market, but have to try to get by with a relatively small budget and still build a good and secure system. But I think now that this is quite possible! Thanks again.
Cheers
Zbook is a very rock solid MIL-specs laptop. All my laptops (work and music) are Zbook, except of course the Macbook.
An HP Z Book is definitely on my shortlist. I also own a MacBook Pro, but unfortunately Cantabile is not available for OSX. I had set up a Windows partition via BootCamp on a trial basis, but Cantabile ran very unstable on it. I think an HP Z Book will win the race. With very good values, even used, this is already relatively cheap. Greetz
