Ok, so this is probably not for everyone and is not trivial
I’ve got a couple of very monophonic instruments such as Sample Modelling Flutes. It would be great to be able to duet with just one hand.
Zebra and Diva both have duophonic modes which split the incoming notes high and low and does a good job tracking for each voice.
Here’s what the Zebra manual says:
Duophonic: emulates an interesting feature of a few classic analogue synths. Most early
mono-synths had either low note (e.g. Moog and Roland) or high note priority (e.g. Ya-
maha and Korg). A few, notably the ARP Odyssey and OSC Oscar, offered both – you
could actually play two notes at the same time – wow!
In hindsight, duophony may have only been a small step towards the kind of polyphony
we expect today, but the quirky charm of its limitations makes it well worth emulating.
Hey Neil,
The only close solution I have that is, once again, the free plz midi plugins.
The MidiPolyphony plugin allows you to introduced a new midi channel for every additional note played.
Set up two instances of your SM Flute and set them to channels 1 and 2 respectively
.
The note priority slider gives you some useful options, Lowest, Highest, Steal Quietest, Loudest, etc.
The one thing I can’t make it do is sound both voices when playing mono lines - and that was the thing about duophony as it was in the Odyssey.
What we need is a filter that does what plz does but also allows a mono line to address both channels.
I’ve no experience with ‘divisi’. A quick search says that it’s all notes divided by the voices. If you’ve 2 voices then 1 note will be played by both voices, 2 notes will play 1 voice each.
Personally, pizMIDI has got me where I need to be. For 2 flutes I needed to use ‘Steal Oldest’ to stop dropped voices when I played legato. The piece I’m playing just has simple harmonies with no unison.
