Some Steinberg VST 3. effect plugins are invisible

Hi there,

I can’t get Cantabile 4 to recognize the majority of Steinberg VST 3. effect plugins; only a tiny fraction of them have become available in Cantabile. They are all VST 3.X effect plugins and located in the same folder, but - for some reason - Cantabile will omit, for example, all dynamics-related Steinberg plugins …

What could cause this?

Two thoughts:

  1. Not sure if this is the case, but some Steinberg plugins only work in Steinberg hosts.
  2. Make sure you’re running the correct platform Cantabile for the plugins (eg: 64bit Cantabile for 64-bit plugins).

If you need me to investigate further, send me a plugin scan log:

  1. Start Cantabile
  2. Make sure your plugin path is set as intended. (Tools → Options → Plugin Options)
  3. From the Tools menu, choose the “Scan Plugin Folders (Full)” command and wait for it to finish.
  4. From the Tools menu, choose Open Settings Folder
  5. Close Cantabile

From the folder opened in step 4, send me the files, log.txt, log-previous.txt, settings.json and plugins.json along with a note on where the plugins are installed and I’ll check it out.

I agree with Brad. I found that you need to run Halion, and load your Steinberg vsts in there. I had a bad experience of Steinberg because of their appalling licensing system, and ditched it, just after buying their M Guitar vst, which was money down the pan. But it was M Guitar was actually made by Accoustic Samples, so I went that way instead with their equivalent library. I am telling you this because the Accoustic Samples libraries run in the UVI Workstation in the same way as Steinberg vsts run in Halion. So I load UVI then the guitar libraries into that. I also use a lot of Kontakt libraries, and therefore run Kontakt Player and put the Kontakt libraries into there.

These plugins are stock plugins. They are only available in the DAW.
However, Steinberg released some of their instruments as external VSTs. Have a look at Halion, Retrologue or Padshop.
Halion is my main Sampler in cantabile. It is almost like having a workstation as a VST and works flawless in cantabile.

What kind of tools are you looking for?

Hi Brad!
Thanks for your prompt response!
1. Not sure if this is the case, but some Steinberg plugins only work in Steinberg hosts. → Might be the case. I wish I knew how to find out which of their plugins are solely designed for Cubase/Nuendo. I just need Steinberg’s FX plugins, primarily Compressor and RoomWorks (a reverb). I looked at their properties in Cubase (please take a look at the screenshot) and found out that these FX plugins seem to be an inseparable part of kind of a FX suit (?) (“Cubase Plug-in Set.vst3”). They are displayed as individual FX plugins when accessed within Cubase, but I can’t figure out how to make them individual plugins outside Cubase.

2. Make sure you’re running the correct platform Cantabile for the plugins (eg: 64bit Cantabile for 64-bit plugins). → Check.

If you need me to investigate further, send me a plugin scan log → Please take a look at the archived file at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uN9gWemrB0Xa29FXG5gR81HtVSsoVyC-/view?usp=sharing

Thanks, Sausagefingers!
But the thing is I don’t need Steinberg VST instruments, just FX plugins for my classical guitar picked by 2 condenser mics. I’ll try using HALion as a launch pad for a FX plugin, but it’s so resource-intensive…

Thanks for your comments, Steffen!

Halion is my main Sampler in cantabile. → I’ll give it a try. I’m just wondering whether you can load just an effect, without any VST instrument.
What kind of tools are you looking for? → I’d like to apply Steinberg Compressor and RoomWorks (a reverb) to my acoustic guitar (picked by 2 mics). I have some other compressors and reverbs - not by Steinberg - at my disposal, but they are rather strainful in terms of processor-memory and I’m not quite satisfied with how they affect the tone and dynamics, so I’m trying to stick to the sound that I like and have been using for quite a long time.

I had a look at the log and not seeing any errors so I presume the plugin files are just not returning any plugin entries when loaded in non-cubase hosts.

Unfortunately, Cantabile’s logging for scanning VST 3 plugins is a bit quiet so there’s not too much detail. If you need me to dig deeper I can add some more logging I’ve added some more logging in build 4206 - rerun the full scan and send me the file and I’ll check it out again.

Another test would be to see if you can load them in any other non-steinberg hosts.

It is not possible to load stock plugins outside the DAW, except for the ones that are made publicly available.

However, there are many freeware or not too pricey plugins that work wonderful as alternatives.
If you try plugins, check if they handle rack states correctly and how they behave when you switch songs while they are processing audio.

Here’s what i’m using:
Channelstrip - Waves Audiotrack or Waves eMo Q4 Filter
Reverb - Waves RVerb
Delay - Waves SuperTap

I got these plugins very cheap in a bundle during one of their sales. They are dated but still sound good and are super light on CPU. I’m using the VST2-Version, they never caused any trouble.

Thanks, Brad! I’ve just installed a trial version of Reaper, and it seems to be as selective as Cantabile with regard to those Steinberg FX plugins (you’ll see the few imported Steinberg FXs and instruments in the screenshot attached).I guess I should get over it and move on, and try some other effects.

Thanks, Steffen! I’ll give those Waves alternatives a try!

PS. I failed to use HALion as an “FX rack” in Cantabile: you can launch an instance of HALion with the required FX plugin, but that plugin cannot affect the Main Microphone input

. The funny thing is that you can link the Main Microphone to the Input In of HALion, but it doesn’t process the audio from that analogue input.

Thanks for the update… glad this isn’t specific to Cantabile.
