***SOLVED - EASY AS *** Mono input - Outpu Left and Right Speakers (Basic)

Hi all, I have a very simple basic question to ask, first off I have never really found Cantabile to be intuitive, and with version 3 I find it better, but still not very intuitive to me. I have and have been using Studio One 3 Professional, Sonar Platinum and REAPER 5 DAW’s for years, I have no problems using them, everything just seems straight forward, so I’m not sure what it is, maybe terminology, don’t know, but I have never really gotten the hang of Cantabile.

I just use Cantabile as a VST host to try out out new VST’s and also to mess around with ideas instead of firing up a DAW. What I want to know, and I know this is very basic, but I can’t seem to achieve it, is how do I get a guitar input or Mic input (Mono) to output to the Left and Right speakers ?. As it stands it will only output to the left side, which corresponds to input 1 on my Delta 1010, the left input. Depending on the amp sim I use, it will output to both Left and Right, but not all, and I just get frustrated trying to get it to work and usually end up doing it in a DAW.

So, if I have my guitar or Mic plugged into input 1 (left) on my interface, no plugins, just purely guitar or mic, how do I get it to output to left and right speakers and not just the Left side ? I know it’s very basic, and I do feel stupid asking it, but for the life of me I can not get it to work.

[Edit] And maybe stereo output is the wrong term, more so how can I get my mono input to come out both Left and Right speakers

Thank you
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Sorry to hear you’ve never grasped Cantabile - happy to answer any questions so either post here or email me direct. Also please feel free to make suggestions on how to make things more intuitive.

I think the easiest way to setup what you want is to create a mono audio input port. eg: here I’ve created a simple audio input port called “Guitar In” with one channel called “Signal”:

From here it depends on the plugin, but suppose you’re using a stereo effect plugin you can just connect that port to the plugin and Cantabile will see the mono to stereo connection and map the one channel of the “Guitar In” port to both inputs of the plugin.

eg: here you can see the mono input signal (level indicator on the Guitar In audio route slot) and it appearing on both stereo outputs:

If you’re using a mono effect and you want it to appear on multiple stereo outputs, it’s very similar. If you map a mono output from a plugin to a stereo output port to speakers, Cantabile will create two connections and send the mono signal to both output channels (with the gain cut in half to keep the overall level correct).

You could also explicitly create this kind of setup with a mono output port. eg: in Options → Audio Ports something like this:

I hope this helps - feel free to post additional questions.

Edit: you might also find this page useful. It explains how ports with different channel counts are connected together.

Hi Jeff,

Try this to build stereo guitar port in C3

  • go to options menu>Audio ports

Add an input port

Name it guitar

edit Left channel to your “input 1 Delta 1010”

Edit Right channel to be also fed by your input 1 Delta 1010

Now you’ve made a pseudo stereo input port driven in both channels with a single mono input

Hope this is what you meant …

Regards

@ Brad - lol, I feel more stupid now than I did when asking the question. That is quite easy, the penny has well and truly dropped now. Thank you very much, I did read that page you linked to many times, but it just didn’t get me there, to be honest I was cursing at the screen saying what is this gibberish, sorry, but in the end it was my own fault, my fear of clicking things I don’t understand for fear of messing something up, just trying to rush through not taking note of everything in front of me, I would be sitting at Cantabile looking at those assignment screens saying to myself what am I supposed to write in there, and how does what I write mean anything to the hardware or software etc, totally oblivious to the Add buttons etc, just rushing through and wanting it to be done now (well ‘for’ me to be honest). But as I said the penny has dropped.

I have never really been one for reading manuals, never really had to to achieve what I wanted, apart from advanced stuff etc, for example the DAW’s I use you just select your audio interface/driver, plug in select your inputs from the drop down etc, but the recording basic editing etc is pretty much the same, and I am able to go from start to finished product without issue, and as I have changed DAW’s over time, there hasn’t really been much of a learning curve at all to go from one to the next, apart from more advanced stuff, different features, Thinking about it now, not really that different from what has to be done in Cantabile, but for whatever reason, terminology, sequence, whatever, it just didn’t click. I managed to struggle through with version 2, luckily for me I had amp sims I was using which allowed the selection of mono or stereo input from within, so that took care of that.

Anyway, I’m now set up and can achieve what I need to achieve with Cantabile, thank you very much.

@dave_dore - Thank you very much for your input, not exactly what I was after, but not that far away, (I did originally explain what I was after in different and not the best of terms, which I later edited for better understanding) and it helped with my understanding, and to get the penny to drop, which it certainly has, so thank you for taking the time to offer your assistance, it is greatly appreciated.

Oh and by the way Brad, Cantabile 3 is far nicer environment to play in. Well Done.

Thanks again guys, very happy camper here.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Great. Glad you’re up and running and glad it turned out not overly complex but as always please feel free to ask any other questions.
