For the last month I have been setting up Cantabile for it’s first big show. I’m getting used to using states. I set up 13 states to correspond with each song we are playing. That seems to be working well and not I am trying to be fancy and use the notes. I was hoping there was a way to select each state then right click and add notes specific to that state but in experimenting, it doesn’t seem to work like that? So far the only way I have been able to get it to work is to add 13 different notes, then go through each state and hide the 12 notes that I don’t need. Is that how it is supposed to work or am I missing something?
That’s how it essentially works. I’m not sure which version of cantabile you are on, I’m using Performer, And I can’t remember if the notes behave differently for the lower versions. But with Performer there’s an easier way… Just create one note on state one. Unlock and lock to save. Then go to state two, double click the note to edit it, type the new note, OK, click on state two again so it’s highlighted, Lock and unlock to save. Repeat for the rest of your states. So the same note field can have different text in each state. Bear in mind that there are other Note parameters which may stay the same by default, such as text size and color.
You can read up on show notes in the Guide or check out the videos. You’ll especially want to read up on cloned states and show note behavior options… A cloned state will also clone the show note as you make changes. But you can change that behavior by selecting States at the top left (next to Setlist IIRC), and checking or unchecking the text option on the bottom left. IIRC when checking Text, the note will not clone. So all your other parameters will clone by default such as tone, plug-in settings, etc, except the note text can differ between the two cloned states. Read up and play around on state behaviors too… There are a lot of options there. After my first few months of using cantabile I defined my default behaviors that made sense for me, and I use them most of the time the same way, just for consistency and ease of troubleshooting. Good luck at the gig,
Tom
You ARE missing something: how about using “Text” state behavior on the notes on the show notes view?
- add a text block to your show notes
- activate “Text” state behavior for that text block
- edit the text block and update state for every state in your list
Also helpful: use variables in your show notes, e.g. $(State) - you can use that to have headers for your show notes that update automatically.
Wouldn’t it be simpler to set each of your songs as a Song?
