I’m using SaxLab 2 for a solo. The sound is authentic but when using it in a live band context it’s rather thin sounding. I’ve thought about routing it to a delay plugin or a chorus plugin but I don’t want to alter the original sound too much. Suggestions?
Hi Lee,
I use eventide ultrachannel for doing this, it has a eq, delay, compressor and doubler in one plug.
I don’t know if it will add too much color but i use it all the time for many things.
Regards
Hi Lee,
I’m primarily a sax player. I would always use some kind of delay on solos. Reverb and compression as needed, but delay is part of the sound. It could range from doubler to leaving some tails. I’ve never tried to match tempo (ala Edge), but delay is good. As far as EQ, I’d roll off everything below 50hz-70hz pretty quick–there’s nothing there but pad noise for a live sax. Punchy mids, and nothing above about 8k.I haven’t used a lot of chorus or flange on live sax. It always makes it sound out of tune to me (purist). Flute might require more radical EQ, but you asked about sax. The coolest thing (it’s a little trite, but depends on the style of music) is a foot pedal or switch to vary the length of delay from doubler to long tail. You hear this with Spyra Gyra and others. Listen to what a real sax sounds like. If you want true old skool non-processed sax, listen to anything by Cannonball Adderley. Then listen to Spyra or Sanborne for what a processed modern sax sounds like.
Excellent suggestions gentlemen!
Also, came across ADT Doubling VST which is free and received positive reviews on KVR.
