Hi all-- I’m trying to apply two different EQs to two separate instruments. I’m using linked racks for everything, so my default signal chain goes Instrument Rack -> EQ Rack -> Master Levels Rack. I have states for each instrument to correspond to their unique EQ presets. In this song, I’ve got an E Piano and Hammond going at the same time, so I’d like to be able to have them each apply the appropriate EQ, but I can’t load the EQ rack twice.
Any suggestions? Do I just duplicate the rack and have separate racks for EQ1 and EQ2?
There are a couple of ways to handle this. If this is the only song you will ever need two EQs simultaneously the easy fix is be to load a second copy of the rack as an embedded rack. If you plan on using multiple EQs in other songs the resource efficient method would be to create a 2nd shared rack.
In general I would suggest to add an EQ behind every instrument you use. An EQ is no CPU hog. So don’t be afraid to add it.
Get your sounds independent EQt and mix them together after that. If the resulting mix needs some more EQing you could do that with a masterEQ which sits directly before the audio output.
I usually put EQs directly into my instrument racks. As @FantomXR wrote, most EQ plugins are relatively cheap on CPU cycles, so having multiple instances isn’t much of an issue.
This way, I equalize my sounds directly within their racks - helps me create different flavors of the same sound (Bright Piano, Mellow Piano, …). Keep the instrument at the same preset, but use different presets for the EQ.
