Glitches - probably CPU throttling

I have my first gig in years coming up this Friday - and obviously this is when the PC starts to act out, I get a lot of glitches, and the profiler indicates that I am way over the top. I have not made changes to the songs recently, so my guess is that it is something else.

When I look at the CPU speed seems to change quite a bit. I have checked (and changed and changed back) the processor speed in the power plan settings, they are 100%. I am using Process Lasso, but I am in doubt if there are any settings in PL that I can change to get this to work.

Any suggestions for what to look at or what to try or change are highly appreciated.

Hi @TorstenH,

sorry to hear that your PC is doing that…I guess that’s just a corollary of Murphy’s law (ā€œAnything that can go wrong will go wrong…at the worst time!ā€).

That’s what comes first on my mind, in no particular order:

  1. try to switch off and on the Audio Engine in Cantabile. This sometimes reduces the load.

  2. check USB cables and look for USB errors (my driver is Yamaha Steinberg USB driver and it tells me if there are errors)

  3. check if power handling of USB hubs and devices is set to ā€œNever put to sleep to save powerā€ (or something like that) in the Device Manager. Sometimes Windows just switches it back to ā€œCan make it to sleep to save powerā€ when I am not watching…

  4. check if there are other processes competing with Cantabile (I have noticed that windows services sometimes get active and try to access the net or other resources aggressively…I have tried to identify them and to give them lower priority in PL, since I also use it)

  5. check if there is a particular plugin behaving nasty, using the profiler. I had to switch off ā€œMulticoreā€ in Diva at some time, because the load was much higher when Multicore was active. However, this setting did not give problems before and I can’t say why it started to happen.

Just a few tips, maybe I could come up with some more, but probably some real expert on the forum will chime in, I hope.

Gabriel

P.S. I am assuming that your system was working well in the present configuration. Otherwise you could also consider increasing the buffer size in Cantabile.

Thanks, really appreciated. The plugin that springs to mind is the VB3-II 2.0 (I’m the process of upgrading) that seems to be affected there most - but I haven’t changed that for a long time, and the issues started recently.

I will go through the list meticulously and see if it hits the nail. I have tried some of these, but panicked a bit and needed structure and a little guidance - thanks for providing that!

Hi,

The one thing I would do is to go through all the recommended tuning settings, as Windows still thinks it knows best when some major updates are applied. E.g. on a recent update all of the USB Power Suspend options had been re-enabled, and I am pretty certain that once core parking got turned on.

Makes a lot of sense. I just went for the obvious candidates, but you are right, start from scratch and check all settings.

I’ve been through all settlings, and basically reset the configuration and started all over. Didn’t get it to work as well as it used to, but I’ve changed buffer size and that made the glitched disappear. There’s a small latency now that I’ll need to accept, I’m not sure if it is because I know the latency had changed or if I really can tell the difference. At least it will get me through the show on Friday.

Thanks for the advice, it was really helpful get some structure on the process. And nice to look at all the old postings in this forum about setup

And just found that I had auto-recording enabled, and it seems to me that it made a difference turning it off. So now I moved the buffer size one step up.

Just for the knowledge, how much resources did the auto - record add?

I’m not sure, but I can test it by adding it again. But I prefer not to change anything until after the gig - debut, small venue, small crowd, but first time in years, so I want to feel confident :-).

Any number in the profiler you think of in particular? Otherwise I’ll just take the average max of the total.

By all means don’t mess up anything, all I was interested in was the recorder resource usage. I can do my own look at it. Thanks for the reply Torsten.

This is interesting, I’ve also been having more glitches over the last couple of months than I used to, and have had to swap out a plugin or two to compensate, as well as increase the buffer.
My gut feeling was that it was my computer rather than Cantabile, but not 100% sure. I keep my computer up-to-date so wonder if a Windows 11 update might have messed things up. Would be interested if there are similar experiences and fixes.

I am going through the plugins now, a few of the effects can probably be replaced. They are apparently aimed at DAW production more than live setup.

Tried to load an older song that I used no problems last year, and it was glitching quite a lot.
From looking at the profiler, much of this seems to come from NI Kore (64bit VST2 I think) which has not been updated/changed for years. I also have not changed any audio drivers etc.
Any potential reasons for reduced performance in Cantabile over the last year? Changes to processor management? I’ve been through the ā€˜glitch-free’ advice but not really gotten significant benefit.
Right now I’m on the verge of updating my laptop, but it feels like just trying to solve the problem by using a bigger hammer…!

Hi @sideburnz,

I would also check the USB power management in the Device Manager. I usually disable the possibiity for windows to switch the USB interface off to save power, but windows 11 has the tendency to re-enable the option by itself.
I would also check the hardware: faulty USB cables can produce errors and glitches.

The best of luck!

Gabriel

+1. Just because you have turned something off, do not assume that Windoze does not have the temerity to think it knows better….

This is why I am still on W10 and have disabled WUpdate. My PCs only go online when I need to download, update or register software.
When/if I upgrade to W11, I’ll do the same.

This is a must.
Makes a huge difference on my systems

I have an engine start binding that toggles the audio engine on/off and it does improve performance. I think there is still an engine bug, but this technique gets around that.
