I am aware that there is a big push going down under to renovate and improve Cantabile but I have a related subject that I wanted to introduce regarding the existing Metronome section. It already covers the commonly needed time signatures and has a good sensible tempo range. My wish list item I would like to see added is a 2 row grid based beat sequencer that could be programmed with simple beat feels for practice and for the isolated count in channel I have for our in ear monitors. It gives us an automatic 2 measure click reminder when a new song loads from the set list. I know my drummer would love it because we play a broad variety of genres and switching styles between them it can be a challenge to remember the feel of the groove before you perform the song. But a simple bass and snare pattern reminder can go a long way toward getting you off on the right foot. The bucket pops grid I have been using in experiments is shown below. It is set up with 64 steps and you can click-draw the pattern into the rows. You can also mute any steps you don’t want so you can set up different timings like 7/8 and 11/8 etc.
The input method could be way more simple GUI wise by just having some fields we load with comma separated 1s and 0s. e.g [1,0,0,0,1,0,1,0] for a bass pattern.
So, in my estimation it would be a worthwhile feature addition to Cantabile if it could use the existing metronome sounds section and live alongside what we already have. Many songs you only need the meter (the existing system) but many would benefit from a simple groove reminder just before you perform them or benefit from practicing against known grooves. I have tested out what a system like this might work like using Bucket Pops from Full Bucket and it can be done that way and really is effective but it was very cumbersome to adapt it to the task of managing it in hundreds of songs. Cantabile could help provide such management I think.
If anyone has better VSTi based systems for this already, wants to see this too or just wants to comment please do.
