Do we need yet another Prophet emulation? We’ll see, we’ll see…
Does it accurately emulate the overheating issues?
I’m sure the original overheating problem will now happen to the processor, since many Cherry Audio plug-ins are CPU hungry.
So I will try it to see if I need the Nth P5 or not.
I tried P-10 all day. Not bad, but no better than other emulations.
CPU? Low for monophonic leads, Audio Load 5 to 15%.
Quite different for poly sounds, up to 50% with an average of 28%.
These values are similar to u-he Repro 5, but much higher than Arturia Prophet 5 V.
One odd thing: when changing presets, the time load increases to about 45% for a second or two.
So I don’t need another Prophet 5/10 emulator.
By the way, a lot of VSTs have become CPU hungry lately. My i7-10750H laptop needs to be replaced with something more powerful.
I think the way out might be an i7-13700K desktop PC in a rack case.
I bought it and really like it. I found it very CPU heavy though. It has a really fun sequencer though.
I demoed it last night, have had no time tonight due to work demands
Based on last night’s demo check, I am on the fence. It sounded great, but then so do all the emulations I already have: Arturia, U-HE and Softube clones. And then I have a real Prophet X which does splits and layers.
Cantabile audio load does vary from 15-50% on my system, but CPU load is negligible, NONE of the cores on my 24 core DAW were breaking out into a sweat.
So do I need it? No. Will I get it? Maybe as I like supporting CA, and I get to say I own a P-10!
Personally I think CA do best when they cover niche instruments nobody has done (or in modern VST3 form with hi res monitor support at least) like Pro-soloist, Taurus, PA3000, which I will snap up in an instant. Where they are producing what has been done before they do garner a little less interest from me. But, a P-10?!!!
I messed about with P-10 again last night, including some checks against
- Arturia Prophet V
- Softube Model 80
- U-HE Repro 5
As cpaulo says, I found the Arturia to be the lightest in terms of resource load, with the others all being around the same.
However, to my ears the Arturia emulation, whilst good, doesn’t sound as good as the others, but may be this would be the goto one when you are on stage and have a busy song where you want the prophet sound.
I’m still on the fence as to whether or not I will get it. Will mess about again later.
I tried the Model-80 a while back, I remember it was processor hog, so I didn’t buy it.
As you said, the Prophet V is worse than the P-10, but it’s good enough for me.
I’m sick of buying three thousand versions of the same synth!
Well, all synths are variations on Oscillator/Filter/Amp. So I am not worried about having several of the same type if they give me something that I like.
I would also say I am not seeing P-10 or Model-80 being a CPU hog, as the the overall CPU load is quite load in my DAW (would need to check my GIG PC of course. The audio buffer is what matters, and they are higher than Arturia, so it depends on what I am trying to run at the same time.
Sometimes I am inaccurate when I write. When I talk about “CPU hog”, I actually mean (very) high buffer audio load.
This is because the buffer load is our most dangerous enemy.
I apologize for this misunderstanding.
Understand and no need for apologies.
As long as the load is no worse than 60% I am OK. It is also why I have a hybrid set up of live/virtual as I can spread the load have the best of both worlds. Some songs may be all virtual, some may be all live synths. Some may be a mix, but I will design it such that there is no overload.
