My Focusrite, of many years. died at a gig over a year ago. I took the advice of many here, and went with a UMC404. I was able to run my Cantabile setup with no problem. I played guitar thru a mic input, and used Cantabile thru usb, just as I did with the Focusrite, so it worked well.
Then, I decided to setup a different routing for a special reason. I ran into a brick wall, as I realized there is no reasonable information at Behringer site. I spent many hours at web sites, and YouTube with no luck.
I was able to finally wrap my head around the fact that mic 1 and 2 input, and usb, are using the two Main outs with XLR and 1/4 inch connection. Mic inputs 3 and 4 are routed to different outputs having only 1/4 inch, and A/V type connectors.
I wanted to have only Cantabile setup into 1 powered speaker, and mic outputs into a 2nd powered speaker. From what I learned, the front right section is for HP output. I think this interface is made more for a DJ setup.
Does anyone have enough experience with this interface to clearly explain this to me?
What are your inputs exactly and what channel numbers are they connected to? You mention having 2 mixes one for Cantabile and one for what other mix? Are all the inputs being routed through Cantabile?
There are 4 mic/TS inputs in the Behringer. #1 and 2 and usb are grouped into 2 XLR, and 2 TS outputs. Mics 3 and 4 are grouped to 4 TS and 4 A/V outputs.
My goal was to have Cantabile vsts output, (which automatically defaults to the 1 and 2 outputs) to one speaker, and use 3 mics to another speaker. I didn’t want to carry a mixer, but I doubt that I can make it happen just using the UMC, since the inputs are grouped in seperate outputs.
Well as far as how it works it expects that all the inputs are routed to a digital host like Cantabile or a DAW for recording. Once in that environment you can select what input goes to what output port on the 404. The playback outputs work like this, Main Out is a mirror of playback outputs 1 & 2 (playback outs A). playback output B is separate and uses playback outputs 3 & 4. I never tried using the 204 I have standalone as a mixer since I power it with USB so I can’t say how that would or wouldn’t work. I do think that if you routed your mic inputs through Cantabile and to the B group playback outputs you would have your separate mix you wanted. Whether it would cause latency problems or resource issues I’m also not sure.
Hmm. I believe you are right. The latency wouldn’t be good.
That is very helpful! I had a 1/4 inch guitar cable from the the “A”, and it was a disaster, so I will switch to B. I am now starting to understand how this works.
You would think I would know all this by now, but I was using the 404 mainly for Guitar.
It is running very well. I have Cantabile instruments into Main outs, to speaker. I am also running vocal through Cantabile fx, out B4, into QSC mixer, to speaker. The QSC boosted the vocal input very well. I experimented using Bleass Voices, Air Vocal FX, and Karanyi.Sounds.Cloudmax.Breeze. Latency was not a problem.
So glad you pulled me out of my UMC brain fog.
I’m glad you figured a way forward. Hoping that all is well and you are playing a bunch. We had our busiest year yet and Cantabile was right there making things flow smoothly. Here’s hoping for another year like the last one (as far as gigs go) I’ll be banking my two until I need a hand!
I just saw this post. I had the UMC404 and now I am using the UMC1820 which is the same as the 404 but with 8 input channels.
You are right, Behringer does not provide much documentation, but the UMC series doesn’t have internal routing, which is the opposite of the RME. So there isn’t that much to know.
I’ve had a very strange year. Many bands breaking up, and others trying to re-form after years apart. Many people are jumping on the Yacht Rock Train because 20 to 80 year olds are embracing it. Venues are happy.
I am now learning Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, Boz Skaggs, Robben Ford, Steely Dan, Hall and Oates, Seals and Crofts, to mention a few. It is basically “soft rock” of the seventies.
There are a few bands that go by different names, just so they can dominate the gigs. That makes it tough for others to get work.
I am filling in on Bass for an Elton John imitator, which puts me on the road again. Not really digging the travel like I used to.
I lost two sisters this year, and turned down many gigs during those times. Rehearsals have stopped since October. So, the EJ gig is done this weekend. It is nice not to be busy for a change.
I now spend my time working on my rig, and recording. Hoping things will get better by spring, but actually, I am enjoying composing again. It’s been awhile.
Here’s to a great new year.
