Stuck Chords, another option?

Hi All, sorry to keep asking questions but im pretty desperate to get this problem sorted, really depressing actually. Re my other posts i havent been able to sort this yet but was thinking of maybe using USB sustain pedals to bypass the Nektar keyboard which it seems to happen on, can i bind that in C3 ok?, maybe from the background rack so it works across all songs?

I’d recommend the MIDI Expression (or Quattro for 4 pedals). It works flawlessly with Cantabile, for all kinds of pedals.

Of course, if your problem is really down to some routing issue in C3, a hardware change probably won’t fix it. It would be nice to identify the true cause of the problem…

I think first you have to (maybe you have already done it) assign something in your controller to midi CC123 (“panic”)
this way if you have a situation during the performance you can just press “panic” and turn all notes off. it’s a safety net!

second, I would investigate the midi path. get yourself MIDI-OX (freeware midi monitor), play the keyboard (just one note)
and see if you get all the Note Off events or maybe sometimes you miss one or two. If you suspect the sustain pedal, do the same - look for missed sustain off messages.
Maybe the controller is sending MIDI clock constantly and jams up the midi signal path? try turning that midi clock off.
another thing that eats up the midi bandwidth is Active Sensing messages. sometimes it will screw things up.

You aren’t using a wireless MIDI by chance, are you? My wireless MIDI will cause stuck notes if the reception isn’t great (unfortunately it happens too often)

Finally - I had similar issues caused by … the USB cable. the problem is, if the cable is “wobbly”, and doesn’t sit tight in the socket, the keyboard might get disconnected for a moment. Cantabile auto-connects it back, but any “note-off” messages that were supposed to be generated during that brief moment will be lost.
How do you check this? try pulling and twisting the USB cable why playing. Does this reproduce the issue? I have solved this problem by using the MIDI connection on my babyface for the controller instead using another USB cable. the cable provided by RME seems to sit very tight in the socket, unlike any other cheap cable I have.

Also, I have had my wireless midi acting up if using cheap usb cable, it seems that a cheap usb cable dropped voltage on current consumption spikes and caused my wireless to reset itself.

Set up a simple song - no racks. Nothing active in background rack.
Place one instrument directly into Cantabile and test.

Hi bloodymary, thanks for the advice. Have put a binding in to restart the audio engine already and worked on the 2 instances at the gig last night but didnt on another occasion, that time i had to actually restart C3 while the band was still playing !!. I am not totally happy with the way the USB cable fits into the keyboards (not a really tight fit if im honest) but i got a couple of really expensive cables (did a lot of research) so happy with them apart from the fit. Wonder how can i get over the loose fit, any suggestions, cable makes ?,

Sorry bloodymary, did you mean you used the midi socket in the keyboard rather than the usb B socket?, that actually sounds like something i could try as i have the Steinberg UR22. Will have a look

I second Neil’s recommendation for Midi Expression. I use this routinely for keyboard pedals.
