Getting back up to speed

I last used my licensed copy of Cantabile Lite about four years ago. Seems I’ve forgotten a lot. I’ve been all over my computer and there are a bunch of holes in my memory and documentation how I got it to work. My goal is to play a midi file using the Sonatina VST piano. I’ve done this before. Here’s a screenshot of my last successful configuration.

Note there is no media player selection in the menu. Also the metronome is grayed out and I can’t get it to work. I CAN play notes in Sonatina fonts with the on-screen keyboard.

There IS a media player line mid screen. When I try to Open Song, it says it can’t open midi files.

I have a new midi file. How can I get Cantabile Lite to play it? Do I need an external midi player to route to it? If so, what suggestions do you have for a player? Once the midi file is playing in an external player, how does it know to bypass the computer speakers and play to Cantabile? THANKS.

You’ll need at least Cantabile Solo to use media players - Cantabile Lite doesn’t support media players.

OK, thanks. I just realized how I did it. I had later purchased a Solo license, but in the screenshot, I had opened Cantabile with the Lite license. I changed the license and account to the Solo and the media player works now.

I do have a question about some piano plugins playing an octave higher than others.

My Finale 2002 file saved to MIDI plays in the correct octave through my Windows 8.1 computer with the Windows native sound fonts. The Sonatina acoustic grand also plays in the correct octave.

However the Alchemy grand piano and the newly installed Versilian Studios upright piano play an octave higher than the MIDI file is intended. How do I get these plugins to play an octave lower?

Over the years I have seen that sometimes the middle C is C3, sometimes C4. I don’t know if this is your situation, but you could fix it this way:
Insert a -12 semitones transpose Midi Filter between Mediaplayer output and Piano VST input.
It may not be the most elegant, but it will work.

This is how it works. In both table and wiring view.

Cantabile can use C3, C4, or C5 as middle C. The pitch doesn’t change, but the designation does. Setting is in Options.

If I understood correctly, there is a +12 transposition, I didn’t ask for further details. So I suggested the easiest way to fix it, a MIDI filter.

As you said, the ‘Middle C’ in the settings only affects the display, not the actual pitch.

Excellent, THANKS. I got it to work. Turns out it was set to transpose an octave higher and I brought it to unison. Looks like there are two ways to get to that screen, one by right-clicking on the main keyboard and choose midi route settings. The other is to click on Omni, which brings up the same screen.

Got 'er done! Love that there’s a forum for this.
