What you’ve said about a MIDI hub (5-pin DIN) vs USB MIDI suddenly jogged my memory that my Akai MPK249 will not allow itself to be seen over my USB2 external hub, but shows up just fine plugged directly into the computer. No other device has that issue.

So, another data point of strangeness for you there! (Why can’t everything just work?)
